Sustained

She could reach out—no, wait—she could hold out her hand
To offer her strength to the other

Though she knew better

Sustained
by Ronda Suder

She found herself again today
Wondering around in the murky darkness of familiar

Intrigued by the breaking she heard
Curious about the beating she simultaneously heard

Knowing she could not look away
She held on to the air around her for strength

She knew that her heart would withstand the pain
And similar to each time before, the breaking again was not the exact same

She could reach out her—no, wait—she could hold out her hand
To offer her strength to the other

Though she knew better

She knew her hand must remain in place, open by her side
Readily available for the one that might seek it
If they were brave enough to request it

She found herself again today
Wondering around in the murky darkness of familiar

Knowing she could not look away ever again
She held on to the air around her for strength

And to her side, the elements came
Reminding her of how far she’d come

Whispering… “the foundation of your truth has been laid,
And from this day forward, anything you can face”

And to her side, more of the same
Reminding her that her patterns had changed

And as a result, her life, her way, would be sustained
Today, tomorrow, and for the rest of her days
